Does Microcredit Really Help Poor People?

The principle claim made about microcredit has been that poor people use it to start or expand microbusinesses, producing additional income that lifts them out of poverty. A new CGAP Focus Note, “Does Microcredit Really Help Poor People?”, cites recent studies that have cast some doubt on that claim. But regardless of whether microcredit helps people escape poverty, it confers important benefits by helping them to cope with poverty, by managing their cash and smoothing consumption in the face of irregular and vulnerable incomes. The Note reviews evidence on the importance that poor people attach to these benefits.
